Focus and Scope

The Journal of Islamic Historical Review (JIHR) provides an international scholarly forum for original and critical research on Islamic history and civilization, with a special emphasis on the contemporary Islamic experience in Indonesia. While rooted in the local context, JIHR welcomes contributions from all regions of the Islamic world, encouraging comparative and transregional approaches.

The journal is open to a broad range of historical periods and thematic areas, embracing interdisciplinary perspectives that engage with the political, intellectual, cultural, religious, social, and material dimensions of Islamic historical life. In addition to studies in historiography and Islamic historical thought, JIHR also accommodates related fields that illuminate the historical imagination, such as philology, archaeology, epigraphy, and palaeography—particularly when these are analyzed in relation to present-day discourses and challenges.

By fostering both empirical and theoretical research, JIHR seeks to contribute to the advancement of Islamic historical studies as a dynamic and evolving field. The journal prioritizes academic rigor, critical engagement, and methodological plurality, aiming to become one of the leading platforms for scholarly discourse on Islam’s pasts and their resonance in contemporary societies.
