History of Qurthuba
Qurthuba: the Journal of History and Islamic Civilization is an academic journal organized by the Department of History and Islamic Civilization, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, which is open-access. This journal was first published on Thursday, September 14, 2017 CE, coinciding with the 23rd of Dzul Hijjah 1438 AH. This journal is managed using OJS, and its journal legality has been registered with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences o LIPI (currently the National Research and Innovation Agency or BRIN ) via www.issn.lipi.go.id (currently www.brin.go.id) on March 20, 2018 with the P-ISSN number: 2620-374X and on April 6, 2018 the E-ISSN number was issued with the E-ISSN number: 2621-1459.
This journal is intended to respond to the urgent need for a publication forum for scientific works specifically for academics and researchers who focus on the field of History and Islamic Civilization. However, it should be noted that before Qurthuba, there were two journals that played a role first: Madaniyah in the 2000s and Al-Manar in 2010-2017 (print version) in facilitating scientific publications. However, both journals, especially Madaniyah, the scope of their studies was still too broad so that they had not been able to fully accommodate the deeper studies needed in the study of the history of Islamic civilization. Based on this reality, an initiative finally emerged to establish a more specific journal called Qurthuba.
The name Qurthuba is the result from a search of dozens of journal names around the world. The affiliation of the Qurthuba journal (قُرْطُبٰى) to Cordoba as the name of the city, the name of the mosque and the name of the university in Spain is more representative of the history and civilization of Islam in Europe. The history of the naming of Qurthuba: The Journal of History and Islamic Civilization is intended to regenerate and recall the memory of Islamic civilization in Spain to Indonesia. This means that this journal has high expectations that it will produce fresh ideas and great thoughts, research results on great civilization and the dialectic of Islamic history that is progressing in the digital era.
The name of journal in English is intended to have a target as a journal with an international reputation. The process of establishing the journal began with intensive discussions among a group of senior lecturers and researchers who had a strong interest in Islamic history and civilization. They agreed that a journal was needed that could be the main reference in this field, not only for the publication of research results, but also as a medium for the exchange of ideas and the development of new theories. After the concept and vision of the journal were formulated, an editorial team was formed involving experts in the field of Islamic history from various universities and research institutions. This team then collaborated with various parties to obtain financial support, technology, and access to literature needed to establish this journal. After the team was formed, the job description was divided, the template and environmental model were refined, the call for papers began, then the team coordinated with PUSTIPD to set up and lay out the Qurthuba website. After the website was completed, the articles were compiled and laid out, the first edition of Qurthuba: The Journal of History and Islamic Civilization was published on September 14, 2017. In the first edition with volume 1 number 1, September 2017, there were 7 articles from 7 authors. This inaugural issue featured a variety of articles that delved into important topics in Islamic history and civilization. The launch of this journal was enthusiastically welcomed by the academic community, especially by lecturers and researchers.
Qurthuba is more than eager to become one of the leading journals in its field, making significant contributions to the development of Islamic history and civilization and enriching academic literature at the national and international levels.
